A & B lead the way at Swindon SML Division 2

The Oxford City team journeyed to Swindon for match 3 of the SML this Saturday, managed to find 10 athletes willing to give it their all despite the hot humid conditions. Ashley Johnson kicked off the day with a 2nd place in the long jump, his jump of 6.46m being beaten by a mere 1cm. Tom Downs also achieved a B string 4th with a jump of 5.04m. Johnson then followed this with unusual appearance in the 400mH managing to get 3rd place in a time of 60.6s. Matt Coffey then followed this up with an equally respectable 4th place in the B string.

Next was the shot, and up stepped Ben Kelsey who took an A string win by over half a meter with his throw of 12.09m. Ashley, now competing in his 3rd event of the day, took another 2nd place with his 10.27m throw. Then up stepped the sprinters, David Gain fighting a close battle with Herne Hill to get a 2nd in the A string 100m in a time of 11.2s, while B string runner Jake Wilson stormed to victory with a seasons best of 11.1s.

Meanwhile, Johnson had increased his tally of events to 6 while beating off some close competition in the A string high jump to come 1st with a leap of 1.75m and getting another 2nd in the Javelin with a throw of 45.61m, shortly followed by a 3rd place from Ben Kelsey.  Then time for the 800m so James Cody stepped up to the mark, and after a hard fought race came a respectable 3rd place in the A string. Next on the track was the 5000m, this saw Matt Coffey put in a valiant effort after returning from illness and after setting the pace for the first few laps brought home a 4th. James Cody then took a 4th place in the A string 400m, by which time Johnson (now on his 7th event) had won the triple jump with a giant leap of 12.90m, supported by Jake Wilson’s B string victory with an equally impressive jump of 12.35m.

The 200m saw a return to the track for David Gain, who not happy with his 100m stormed to victory in a blistering time of 22.0s, beating his Herne Hill rival over nearly a second. Tom Downs then flew round the bend to take a 2nd place in the B string in a time of 23.9. Ben Kelsey then emphasised his field presence with a huge throw of 45.58m taking another 1st place in the A string discuss. Pete O’Keefe, now on his second event after taking a 5th in the hammer, now claimed 4th place in the B string discuss with a throw of 25.01m. After taking a victory in the A string 110mH by over two seconds with his time of 16.3s, Johnson had a taste for victory, and assembling his relay team including sprinters, Gain, Wilson and Downs they made their first attempt at the club 4x100m relay record of 42.8 which has stood since 1978. Unfortunately a couple of bad changeovers let them down but with only half a second to take off their still very fast time of 43.3 the record is surely now within reach…
